Tandem learning
"I think you learn more face-to-face; the whole point is to make a friend."
What is it?
Tandem learning is when two people from different countries meet
informally to :
- learn the other person's language and/or find out about each other's country
- find out more about the person and their culture
- exchange information about work,
study or interests
What are the benefits of tandem learning?
- a chance to share your culture with someone
- genuine, fascinating conversations
- a unique way of learning
- mutual support and interest
- a potential friend for life...
Who can get involved?
Anyone who studies or works at SHU:
- UK and international students
- Academic, administrative and
manual staff
How does it work?
You register your language and cultural interests on the Tandem
website or attend the launch which will be held one evening
in October. This is an opportunity to meet UK partners and
enjoy a drink and a chat together.
There will be a brief presentation about the way that the scheme
works and information for you to take away, plus hints on how to
get started.
What do students think about Tandem Learning?
- "I think you learn more
face-to-face; the whole point is to make a friend."
- "We went to cafes and bars
around the University, movies, pubs, museums, galleries, the gym,
taking days out together and spending time with the UK student's
family - including Christmas."
- "When it works, it's brilliant."
- "I feel I could do it with
other languages now - if I get the chance I'll be straight in. I
know I'll be understood by someone else and I'm going to try. Before
this, I was learning a language for two years and I'd never spoken
to an Italian person. I had no confidence. I learnt so much so quickly..."
- "I found out that it's
trendy to speak English in other countries."
