You are expected to attend all timetabled sessions; for courses in Health, attendance is a course requirement and your Tutors will monitor your attendance. Tutors should be informed of any medium/ long-term sick leave or other problems which will affect your attendance on the course.
Please familiarise yourself with this as it will contain essential information relating directly to your course.
All pre-registration health and social care courses have special requirements in terms of the initial reporting and subsequent monitoring of a range of health, disability and related factors that may have a bearing upon your studies with us and whilst on placement. You will have been provided with this information and the general requirements at the time of acceptance onto your course. In addition you must inform your Course Leader / Level Manager / Student Support Officer immediately of any changes in your health which could affect your performance on your course. This will allow the University to identify the impact of your health on your training and whether additional support mechanisms can be put in place either from placements or the Faculty or from the University's Disabled Student Support.
For pre-registration students on health and social care courses it is essential that you complete certain immunisations prior to commencing placements to ensure that you can practice safely. Failure to complete the immunisation programme will result in you being withdrawn from the course. All information regarding vaccination must be carried out or approved by Sheffield Occupational Health Service who in turn confirms to the Professional Issues Team the status of student clearance.
For Biosciences students who intend to go on placement in hospital laboratories it is mandatory to be vaccinated against hepatitis B and advisable for any student working in laboratories where they may come into contact with human tissues or body fluids.
Students on pre-registration health, social care and sports courses are subject to criminal record checks via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). These checks will occur prior to or during the first year of your training; you will be contacted by the Professional Issues Team to confirm when your check will take place. Once you have had the check and received your Enhanced Disclosure certificate please ensure that you keep it safe as you may be required to provide evidence of this anytime throughout your training.
When applying for a pre-registration health or social care course applicants are asked to complete a declaration form notifying the University of any relevant criminal record they may have. If following the completion of this initial form (either prior to enrolment or during your training), you have any involvement with the police or should there be a change in your criminal record you should immediately notify your Student Support Officer who will provide you with the relevant paperwork you must complete and submit to the Professional Issues Team. Your Student Support Office will also advise you on the next stages of the process. You should be aware that the Faculty will consider changes to criminal records under the University's Fitness to Practise regulations.
