Chromebooks
Chromebooks are available from self-service cabinets in both libraries. You don't need to issue them, simply collect one and use it anywhere in the building.
Chromebooks cannot be taken out of the libraries and their location is tracked if taken from the building.
The default browser is Google Chrome, and you can access your University email, work on documents stored in OneDrive or Google Drive, check your timetable and print documents
Once you have finished return the Chromebook to the cabinet and plug it into the power adaptor to ensure it is charged for the next user.
Week loan laptops
There are two smart-locker units:
- Adsetts Level 4
- Collegiate Library - on the ground floor beneath the stairs
You can access everything off campus you would usually be able to access on campus on a University PC.
How to borrow a laptop
- Swipe your SHUcard on the small screen
- A number will be displayed; press the button on the corresponding locker to open the door
- Unplug the laptop. You'll notice there are power cables for you to borrow too
- If you are taking the laptop off campus, make sure you login before you leave the library
Laptops count towards your loan limit of 20 items; you'll be able to see the laptop listed in My Library Account just as you do for books you've got on loan.
How to return a laptop
Laptops must be returned by midnight seven days after issue, regardless of what time you borrowed it. The service is available 24/7/365 to match the opening hours of the libraries. Extensions are not available.
- Laptops must be returned to the locker they were issued from
- Swipe your SHUcard on the small screen again
- The same locker door that you borrowed it from will open automatically
- The due date is displayed on My Library Account.
- Replace the power cables at the back, then plug the laptop in to recharge. Plugging it in 'returns' the item on My Library Account

Self service laptops
Laptops are available from the self-service cabinets in both libraries. You don't need to issue them, simply collect one and use it anywhere in the building.
These laptops cannot be taken out of the library, and location tracking software is installed (so we will know if you try to leave with one!).
The laptops act just like any University PC, including access to the standard software and printing facilities.
Power cables should be with the laptops, but please ask at a Helpdesk if you need a replacement. Once you've finished with a laptop, please return it together with its power lead to the cabinet.
Smart locker laptops
These (non-library) laptops can be used anywhere on campus for up to three hours. They have standard University software installed (Office 2010, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer). Once logged in you can access everything you would usually find on a University PC. There is no need to connect to the wifi network - this should happen automatically. There are several smart-locker units:

How to borrow a laptop
Laptops can be borrowed for up to three hours, Monday - Friday 8am - 6pm and 8am - 4pm at the weekends (City campus only). To use:
- Swipe your SHUcard against the card reader on the front of the laptop cabinet
- The display panel will confirm the loan and indicate which bay to use
- Open the locker by pressing the button next to the green light
- Carefully unplug and remove the laptop
- Close the locker and the display panel will confirm that the loan has been recorded
How to return a laptop
- Swipe your SHUcard against the reader
- The display panel will indicating which bay the laptop came from, and automatically unlock the bay
- Open the locker and plug the laptop in, with the power supply side nearest the door
- Close the locker and the display will show that the loan has been cancelled
