The University Language Scheme (ULS) offers you the chance to develop your language skills and knowledge of other cultures by studying a language as part of your course. Six languages are offered: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.
Learning a language adds variety and fun to your study and improves your employment prospects. You can study a language you have learned previously or start a new one. You do not have to be an expert linguist - we offer six stages from beginners to advanced. When you enrol on a language unit we put you in a stage suitable to your competence. The aim of the scheme is to give you practical communication skills in the language of your choice for work and leisure. You learn about the country or countries where the language is spoken. More advanced students can gear their language study towards their subject specialism. Students on sandwich courses can use their language skills to gain a placement abroad.
On most courses you choose at least one optional unit. If you decide to do a language option, you normally choose this option on the module choice form for your course.
Assessment of the language unit is by assignments set regularly throughout the course. The assignments are mainly based on realistic and practical tasks designed to test the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. For example, speaking tasks include role-play and presentations (for the more advanced students); written tasks include formal and informal letter writing, translations and summaries of texts in the foreign language.
If you are a beginner, no previous qualifications are necessary and you enrol at stage one. The course allows individuals with existing language skills and/or qualifications to study at more advanced levels, for example if you have an A level in a language, you will enrol at stage four.

If you choose a ULS language, you will then be contacted by the ULS administrator to confirm that you are being attached to the correct stage of the language. Students who have not been able to register in this way may contact the ULS administrator on (0114) 225 3362 or attend face to face registration sessions which will be held at the beginning of the academic year.
Note: There are no 10 credit ULS modules.
Please note that Level 6 students are not permitted to choose stage 1 (beginners) of any language as part of their course.
