Specialist support for refugee students

At Sheffield Hallam we provide specialist support to refugee students due to the additional challenges you face which can have considerable impact on your educational experiences and outcomes.

Nominated specialist adviser

We have a specialist adviser for refugee students who help you navigate student services available to you, including student funding, study skills and student wellbeing.

You can bring any queries you have about your transition into Higher Education to your specialist adviser. You will also be invited to attend regular meetings with the adviser to assist you with any additional challenges you may face throughout your course.

You can contact the nominated specialist adviser for refugee students by emailing internationalexperience@shu.ac.uk

Academic support

During your studies you will be assigned an Academic Adviser. You can discuss your academic, personal and professional development with them. They will be available to support you through every level of your study, including placements and heading into employment.

You will also have full access to The Skills Centre, where you can book one-to-one tutorials, receive written feedback on your work, attend workshops and browse online resources that will help you develop your academic skills.

If your first language is not English, you can attend weekly classes on the University English Scheme and use the Language Advisory Service to help improve your spoken and written work.

Mentoring scheme

We run a mentoring scheme, Culture Connect, which matches you up with an experienced undergraduate for a semester who will guide you through University processes and life as a student in Sheffield.

You can share your aspirations and concerns with your mentor, and they will provide you with support and encouragement while you settle in.

Student wellbeing

The Student Wellbeing Service can help to support your psychological wellbeing in order for you to manage your studies and make the most of university life.

The service provides access to self-help resources, offers wellbeing appointments and can direct you to specialist support if required. Contact them by telephone 0114 225 2136 or email student.wellbeing@shu.ac.uk
