Student Virtual Private Network (VPN)

What is the VPN?

The VPN is a secure connection from your computer to the University network.

It is a dedicated student service for those studying and working off campus.

It is not a general use VPN and will only allow access to specific services.

It will not work on campus on the University networks where it is not required for this specific access.

What can I use the VPN for?

Please note: Not everything the VPN is used for is detailed here. Some uses may be course specific.

The two main reasons to use the VPN service are:

- Some courses will require you to access teaching resources which are not generally available, you will be informed on your course when you will need to access the VPN and the teaching or research resources you should use.

- To support the use of AppsAnywhere when using it on your own Windows computer*. Some apps require that you connect to the University network before you log in to AppsAnywhere so they appear in AppsAnywhere and can then acquire a licence to run. You do not need to use it for all the apps in AppsAnywhere – just those that only appear when connected to the VPN.

* Note for Mac users: AppsAnywhere only works in a Windows environment meaning that to use it on your own Mac you need Windows installed. You should then run both AppsAnywhere and the VPN in that environment. This means you should follow the VPN installation and configuration instructions below for Windows. You can use Windows on your Mac by dual booting or by using Parallels. If you need Windows and don't have it installed on your Mac please see Free and Discounted software for information on how to get Windows 10 for free and Parallels at a discounted rate. Note: To use the VPN for any purpose other than AppsAnywhere on your Mac you do not need Windows.

How should I use the VPN?

Only use the VPN when you are accessing specified University services or using an app that requires it.

Only remain connected to the VPN for as long as you require access to teaching services or apps that require VPN, then disconnect.
