Borrowing from the libraries

How do I borrow books and other items?

Self-service borrowing and return machines are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at both Adsetts and Collegiate Libraries. You will need your SHUcard to use them.

Certain items, such as Document Supply items and Audio Visual Equipment must be borrowed and returned at a Helpdesk during staffed opening hours.

You can have up to 20 items on loan at one time. Please note: laptops count towards this total.

Items classed as 'Reference only', such as print journals and dissertations, cannot be borrowed.

How long can I borrow items for?

Distance learners, part-time students and students with learning contracts can borrow library items for 2 weeks. Everyone else can borrow for 1 week.

Can I renew items?

Items will automatically renew at the end of each loan period unless

  • they have been requested by someone else or
  • they have been renewed for a total of 52 weeks or
  • your account has expired because you're due to finish your course

Note: You are only guaranteed the item for its current loan period. Items that can't be renewed need to be returned as soon as possible.

It is recommended that you check My Library Account regularly to avoid fines.

How do I return items?

Most books and other items (except laptops) can be returned via the self-service machines in either library. You don't need to return items to the library that they were borrowed from.

If you have borrowed a laptop from one of the smart lockers in the library, please return it to the set of lockers where it came from.

You can also post items back to the University libraries. We would recommend using recorded delivery to cover yourself against loss. If you do post books back to us, the date on which you post them will be used as the return date.
