Can I receive support off campus?
We recognise that some students may find it difficult to come on campus for a wellbeing appointment. For example, you may be a distance learner, on placement or have other commitments; perhaps due to a physical disability your mobility is affected; or you may simply prefer to engage with support other than face-to-face. There are a number of options available:
Most appointments are face-to-face but by special arrangement and where appropriate, we offer telephone appointments. In some cases and by special arrangement we may be able to arrange for sessions to be delivered by email, telephone and/or webcam, either with one of the Practitioners within our service or with a Practitioner via the Big White Wall. For either of these, register with our service as normal and indicate your preference for a phone appointment or email counselling in the section, ‘Is there anything we need to know to help you access our service?’
In addition to or instead of support from a Student Wellbeing practitioner, you may find Big White Wall helpful. SHU subscribes to Big White Wall, a safe online community of people who are anxious, down or not coping, who support and help each other by sharing what’s troubling them, guided by trained professionals. It can help you start to take control and get the support you need to feel better.
